Arcate di Greco is a railway overpass, which used to be on the periphery of Milan. As the city has expanded, residential areas have been built leaving an uninhabited zone around the overpass. The brief was to integrate this area into the city. The noise created by the passing train has been a major barrier to using this space. The design includes multiple layers of differently sized and spaced metal curtains, which reduce the noise of the passing trains without totally enclosing them. Public facilities including a sports centre in the surrounding planted park area make the whole situation much more attractive for public use.
